AMbulance Project
Finding an ambulance or a vehicle that can be fabricated into one for less then $15,000 was indeed a monumental task ... but, as luck would have it, a 1960 Mercedes Unimog Radio Van was found, and in all places ... Arizona. For the winter of 2003-4 it was stored with a large commercial fire apparatus fabricator in Phoenix, but in May, it rolled 100 miles through the desert and over a 6,000 ft. pass into Prescott, Arizona. While in
Prescott, at T-Lo's Ultimate Offroad, the Unimog received new tires, a brake system overhaul, a new canvas roof, a tune-up with fluid changes, and a stretcher mounted inside the radio box.
Complete fabrication will be completed in Mexico, probably in Puebla before actually arriving in Tlachichuca. Much work remains to be done … lights purchased in the USA need mounting, electrical work and radios need to be purchased, and it needs to be painted …camouflage green/brown is not an option. Then of course, there are the ever present operational expenses, not with standing the very high price of petro in Mexico.
And the Clinic …
To accept the ambulance, Dr. Gerardo Reyes Carlin was required by the Cruz Roja Mexicana to provide a clinical space for receiving patients. Dr. Reyes responded by putting a one room clinic … very austere and basic in nature in his family compound, which is also the site of Servimont, the mountain guiding service that the family runs. Presently the clinics hospital bed dates from the Mexican Revolution and its ventilator from WW II. There is much work to be done here, with a great need for newer and more modern equipment.
So, as you can see, there is a huge need for your help ...
